From the NHS to Poetry: The Creative Life of Dr. Pulak Sahay After 38 Years in Medicine.

Dr. Pulak Sahay, a Consultant Gastroenterologist, who served in the NHS for 38 years, chose a different path after stepping away from full-time medical practice. Instead of slowing down, he turned towards poetry, painting, theatre, wildlife photography, and public health awareness with the same passion that had shaped his medical career.

As Upper GI Cancer Lead within his Trust, Dr. Sahay saw first-hand, how little awareness many patients had about Reflux Disease and its long-term risks. This concern led him to establish CARD (Campaign Against Reflux Disease) in 2010, a UK-registered medical charity focused on patient education and awareness.

Long before poetry entered his life, Dr. Sahay had already built a strong artistic background through theatre. From Shakespeare to Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams, he spent decades on stage, performing major dramatic roles such as Malvolio in “Twelfth Night” and Cardinal Wolsey in “Henry VIII” performed at York Minster on the 500th anniversary of the ascension of Henry VIII to the throne. Theatre gave him a deep understanding of emotion, human conflict, and life itself — themes that later shaped his poetry.

His poetry collection, “A Bouquet of Poems”, released in 2024, reflects years of thought, observation, and emotional depth, gathered across medicine, theatre, travel, and life experience. The book was later launched at the House of Lords by Lord Parekh, in April 2025.

Dr. Sahay’s creative work remains closely tied to his charitable mission. Proceeds from his poetry, artwork, greeting cards, and photography projects, support CARD and its awareness efforts.

Now preparing for the release of his wildlife photography book, “Wildlife Wonders – A Journey into the Wild”, Dr. Sahay continues to blend art, compassion, and public service in a rare and meaningful way.
