Mahesh Bhardwaj has devoted much of his life to public service. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Government Post Graduate College, Dharamshala, followed by a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) and an MBA from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. He began his career as a government school teacher in a remote area of Chamba district before joining the Himachal Pradesh Administrative Service in 2005. In 2008, after successfully clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination, he joined the Indian Revenue Service. He currently serves as Commissioner, Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST), Jammu & Kashmir.
Alongside his distinguished career in government, Bhardwaj has always nurtured a deep interest in Indian history. His latest novel, The Line Through Our Hearts, is set during one of the most tragic periods in the history of the Indian subcontinent. It tells the story of two brothers, Yunus Khan and Yaqub Khan, both Majors in the British Indian Army. After Partition, their destinies diverge dramatically. One joins the Indian Army, while the other serves in the Pakistani Army. Before long, they find themselves on opposing sides during the first Kashmir conflict.
More than a story of war, the novel explores how a single political decision transformed the lives of families, friends, and entire communities. The Line Through Our Hearts is inspired by real historical events spanning the period from the Second World War to the ceasefire in Kashmir. Bhardwaj devoted years to researching historical records to ensure that the novel’s backdrop remained authentic and historically accurate.
Much of the narrative is drawn from the author’s interactions with members of the extended families of the two officers on whom the story is based. The military aspects of the novel have been enriched by insights and information shared by officers of the Kumaon Regiment of the Indian Army, lending authenticity to the portrayal of military life and operations.
His earlier novel, The Last Mission, explored the Bangladesh Liberation War through a blend of history and fiction. With The Line Through Our Hearts, he returns to another defining chapter in South Asian history. Both novels reflect his commitment to telling stories that reveal the people behind the headlines and the human emotions behind historical events. There is a common thread between the two books- Yaqub Khan, He was a Major in Pakistani army where he fought his own brother in first Indo-Pak conflict. He later on rose to the rank of Lieutenant General and was Commander Eastern Command of Pakistani army in 1971. He objected to proposed military crackdown on civilians and advised Yahya Khan then President of Pakistan against it. Due to this he was side-lined and a brutal suppression of Bengalis started which led to a civil war and finally to creation of an independent Bangladesh.
