As part of its expanded safety measures for teens, Instagram owner Meta Platforms announced on Tuesday that users under the age of sixteen will not be permitted to broadcast or unblur nudity in direct messages they have received without parental consent.

The social media giant also announced that Facebook and Messenger would now have protections for users under the age of 18.

In response to mounting criticism of the impact social media has on young people’s lives, Meta introduced its Instagram adolescent account program in September to provide parents additional choices for monitoring their kids’ online activities.

Users in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia will be the first to receive the most recent modifications, and in the upcoming months, users worldwide will follow.

Teens under 16 are no longer allowed to use Instagram Live without parental consent as a result of the changes. According to a blog post by Meta, they also want authorization to “turn off our feature that blurs images containing suspected nudity” in direct conversations.
