Few musicians inspire as much respect and curiosity as Skerik, the saxophone innovator who has spent decades pushing the limits of sound. With Scared of Eric, guitarist and composer Ari Joshua offers a powerful musical tribute to that very spirit of experimentation. The new single, released through Music Factory Records, unites Joshua with Skerik himself, along with organist Delvon Lamarr and drummer Grant Schroff, for a dazzling instrumental experience.
From its opening groove, Scared of Eric radiates energy. It’s a psychedelic boogaloo-funk jam that feels alive—built on rhythm, spontaneity, and connection. Each player brings their own flavor: Lamarr’s soulful Hammond tones glide beneath Joshua’s expressive guitar, while Schroff keeps the pulse tight yet unpredictable. And then there’s Skerik, whose unmistakable sax tone ties it all together with the fiery precision only he can deliver.
For Joshua, this collaboration is deeply personal. “I first saw Skerik when I was a kid,” he says. “His sound hit me right in the chest. To be able to write a song inspired by him, and then record it with him—that’s something I’ll always treasure.” That sense of gratitude and admiration permeates the track, giving it both heart and purpose.
Behind the scenes, the single was recorded live by Mell Dettmer at Studio Soli, capturing the chemistry that only happens when top-tier musicians perform in the moment. The track was later mixed by Jason Gray at Blue Mallard Recording and mastered by *Doug Krebs, ensuring every note feels rich and dynamic. The cover art by Chris Ball of Deepgroove Designs complements the sound perfectly—vibrant, abstract, and full of motion.
Scared of Eric is more than a tribute—it’s a celebration of artistic connection. It honors Skerik’s groundbreaking legacy while shining a light on the creative synergy that happens when great musicians share the same wavelength. For fans of adventurous jazz, funk, and improvisation, this release is a reminder of why live, organic music still matters.
